Dancer and actor, currently based in Tokyo. JUNYA ISHII was born in Japan in 1983 and grew up in Mexico and Canada. He has been working across the fields of dance, theatre and film. His interest is to discover the state of consciousness and unconsciousness, state of being through the body and its perception. In 2009, he began working for Regional Creative Atelier Josef Nadj,Kanjiza, Serbia to dance for the pieces choreographed by Josef Nadj. As an actor, he works as leading role for “2045 Carnival Folklore” directed by Naoki Kato, which was premiered at Seattle International Film Festival in 2015. He organize independent distribution company PLATAUX to organize “2045 Carnival Folklore live screening tour” in Europe, then currenly working for Japan-Spain international dance project “TOPOS”.
JUNYA ISHII is a dancer, an actor, and an organizer of independent distribution company PLATAUX, currently based in Tokyo. He was born in Japan in 1983 and grew up impermanence in Mexico-city, Aguas Calietes and Toronto. He has been working across the fields of dance, theatre and film. His interest is to discover the state of consciousness and unconsciousness, state of being through the body and its perception.
During the period when he was studying comparative literature and philosophy at Rikkyo University / Saint Paul’s University in Tokyo, he began to appear as an actor for several experimental dramas and independent films. After graduating university, he moved to Hungary and started to travel as a dancer. Since then, he has been doing plenty of sessions with improvised musicians and visual artists. In 2009, he visited Kanjiza, a village of Vojvodina at the boundaries of Hungary and Serbia (ex- Yugoslavia), then suddenly became a member of Regional Creative Atelier Josef Nadj to perform and tour for the theatre pieces choreographed by Josef Nadj.
The experience, which he made dialogues between artists, dancers, musicians, filmmakers and poets from the Vojvodina region and Hungary influenced him a lot. He continued traveling from Hungary to Serbia, then Croatia, Bosnia Herzegovina, Macedonia, and Albania for taking photo documents to try to understand about the history such as Siege of Sarajevo, Yugoslav Wars, and Holocaust which nobody taught enough in the education system in Japan. Before he got sick and took rest for a year, he participated a dance project “Asagao” (2013) produced by Hungarian / Transylvanian composer Albert Márkos.
As an actor, he works as leading actor and distributor of Japanese anti-nuclear noise sci-fi film “2045 Carnival Folklore” directed by Naoki Kato, which incorporates with live music by Sierror! and his dance performance. It was premiered and live performed at Seattle International Film Festival in 2015, then followed other festivals such as Casa Asia Film Festival at Caixa Forum Barcelona in 2016, Camara Japan in Lantaren Venster Rotterdam, among others.
In 2017, he received a grant by Agency of cultural affairs, government of Japan “Program of Overseas Studies for upcoming artist” to create a new dance performance piece with Spanish dancer, Pau Aran Gimeno for celebrating the 150th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Spain and Japan in 2018. He believes in instinct, and have been practicing to write what he watched and thought. His dance is an extension of this self-practice. Junya Ishii is currently based and worked in Tokyo.
